Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister

A Mentor's Role

What does it take to be a Big Brother or Big Sister?

PhotoIt’s not about special skills or how smart you are. Big Brothers and Big Sisters aren't superheroes but rather ordinary people who want to share their life experience and provide friendship, guidance and support through mentoring.

As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you are simply a friend to a child. Busy people of all ages (including high school juniors and seniors) can get involved. We ensure that your friendship fits your lifestyle, and we have something for everyone. With only a handful of hours a month, you can be a Big Brother or Big Sister.

Professionally trained staff members screen all applicants thoroughly before matching them with children, and consistent agency support is given to the mentor, child and parent or guardian. Being a "Big" means listening and learning from a Little Brother or Little Sister, but most of all it means being there, hanging out, having fun.

What does a Big Brother or Big Sister do?

The most important gift a Big Brother or Big Sister can give a child is time. The activities shared by the two are much less significant. In our community-based program "Bigs" and "Littles" enjoy playing sports, seeing movies, going over schoolwork, visiting museums, washing the car, taking walks, volunteering in the community, or just hanging out.

In our school-based program, “Bigs” spend time with “Littles” in an elementary school setting. They can read, help with school assignments, play cards, eat lunch together, shoot baskets, or just talk.
